Highlights of my time spent as both a student on and a mentor for FRC Team 5199, along with projects from FTC
FRC Team 5199
My final year of high school, I joined CUSD’s FIRST Robotics Team 5199, Robot Dolphins From Outer Space. I had the role of CAD lead during the design season, and crew chief during the competition season. Another large portion of my job was ensuring compatibility of all parts and subsystems, bringing up any fit and finish issues with the team, and problem-solving ways to fix them.
CAD
As the CAD lead for Team 5199, I spent most of my time converting hand drawings into SolidWorks parts, and joined those into assemblies. I parameterized most of the main subsystems and streamlined the iteration process. I was often called upon to trouble-shoot SolidWorks errors on parts and assemblies.
Volunteering
During my time on FRC Team 5199, I was a volunteer mentor for the associated FTC Team 15497 MantArrays. After I graduated high school, I returned to Team 5199 as a mentor, helping out in all aspects with a primary focus on CAD. Being able to watch these students grow and being an instrumental part of their engineering learning process has been a life-changing experience for me. I was also hired to teach CAD for the on-campus class in which team members are enrolled.
FIRST Tech Challenge
I was a founding member of Team 13171, the Polyisoprene Mallards, a small FTC team from Tustin. Our mentor had a very hands-off approach, allowing me to take more of a leadership role in the team. This was my first robotics team experience after years of individual robotics experience; I learned how to work with a team, approach a problem quantitatively, and choose the best solution.
